Around a year ago, construction work began in Wallisellen on the first wooden high-bay warehouse in Switzerland.
The ground-breaking ceremony for our new central warehouse in Wallisellen took place on 27 February 2018. What is special about the new building is that it will be the first high-bay warehouse in Switzerland to be built from timber.
At the moment (February 2019) the construction workers are building the shell of the basement and ground floor. «At the end of the first quarter of 2019, the upper floor will follow», explains Benjamin Ertl, Head of Logistics, who is responsible for the construction project.
Why a high-bay warehouse made of wood?
Winterhalter + Fenner has been working on the subject of sustainability for quite some time: «For us, it goes without saying that a healthy use of energy is also possible in harmony with economic aspects», says David von Ow, CEO of Sonepar Suisse.
Wood or steel? Material costs are now identical. The sustainable material wood also has to meet exactly the same requirements in terms of load-bearing safety, fire protection, durability, accuracy and cost-effectiveness.
The advantages of the new central warehouse predominate: With the Autostore we are creating new capacities, the building is equipped with the latest technology, it is fully automated and sustainable.
The new central warehouse is scheduled for completion in March 2020. The first customer deliveries are to start in August 2020.
